The patent-pending Polar Life Pod® (PLP) is an innovative, cold water immersion system to facilitate the rapid on-site cooling of individuals, whenever and wherever needed. The PLP is collapsible, compact and portable, making it easy to set-up and use.

According to the National Athletic Trainers' Association's (NATA) position statement on exertional heat illnesses*:
  • Cold water immersion (CWI) is recognized as the gold standard method of cooling
  • Death from exertional heat stroke (EHS) is 100 percent preventable when proper recognition and treatment protocols are implemented
A recent study presented by Central Michigan University**:
  • Compared the PLP to the NATA recommended cooling immersion tub for heat illness
  • Found the PLP cooled hyperthermic subjects faster than the TUB and with fewer resources.

Readily available whenever and wherever needed!

  Compact and Portable Design
  • Packaged ready for use in a convenient and transportable gym bag that weighs less than 10 lbs.
  • Unlike large, cumbersome tubs, the Polar Life Pod® is easy to keep on the sidelines and transport to the athlete, instead of picking up the athlete and transporting them to a stationary TUB.
Rapid Set-up and Immersion of Individual Being Submersed
  • Requires just 40-60 gallons of on-site ice water depending on the size of the individual.
Effective Immersion of the Body, Neck and Back of the Head
  • Fits individuals up to seven feet tall and 400 pounds. Fold the foot of the Polar Life Pod® under to adjust to the height of smaller individuals.
  • The floating head support pillow hyperextends the neck and helps keep the individuals' airways safely elevated and out of the water, while cooling the neck and the back of the head. Note: the individual airways must still be monitored for safety.
Designed by a licensed athletic trainer with over 30 years of experience in the field.

Made and designed in the USA with imported parts.

Benefits and Features of the Polar Life Pod®

Polar Life Pod Features

On-Demand, Reusable Cold Water Immersion Device
The PLP is an on-demand water immersion device that can quickly be set up to use whenever and wherever needed. It is made out of a heavy-duty PVC and is capable of fitting individuals up to 7 feet tall and weighing up to 400 lbs.
Requires Just 40 to 80 Gallons of Water
The PLP requires four (4) to six (6) 10-gallon Gatorade type containers of on-site ice water, depending on the size of the athlete.
Integrated Dual Drawstring Hood
Allows for full body, neck and partial head coverage of the individual being submersed while minimizing water leakage.
Arm Ports with Sleeves
Allows the individual being submersed to extend arms outside of the PLP, easing the process for the athletic trainer to easily check vitals.
Adjustable Straps
Minimize water usage by forming the PLP to the individual's body shape while allowing for even and effective water distribution.
Access Port and Attached Thermometer Bag
Access port midway down the PLP allows access for temperature monitoring.
Full Length Anterior Two-Way Zipper
Facilitates ground level access for individual being submersed into and out of the PLP. Also allows the PLP to be rapidly filled with water from on-site containers. The water can then be evacuated quickly at the foot of the PLP at a safe distance from the individual's head.
Floating Head Support
Fits snugly inside the hood and allows the individual to keep their head above water. This hyperextends the neck, keeping their airways clear and above water as well, while the neck and back of the head are covered in the cold water.
Waterproof Digital Thermometer
For monitoring the water temperature inside the PLP.
Collapsible, Portable and Convenient Design
Packaged ready for use in a convenient and transportable gym bag weighing less than 10 lbs. with the PLP.
Post-Immersion Convenience
Allows the individual to be easily removed after immersion to initiate compressions and CPR whenever needed.

Central Michigan Research Study Comparing the Polar Life Pod® to Stationary Tubs

Rectal Temperature Cooling Rates in the Polar Life Pod® are Excellent and Consistent with Stationary Tubs
Kevin C. Miller, PhD, AT, ATC and Noshir Y. Amaria, DO, AT, ATC, CAQSM  |  Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant MI

Central Michigan Using Polar Life Pods for Research Study

Cold water immersion (CWI) is recognized as the gold standard method of cooling, and according to the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) position statement on exertional heat illnesses, death from exertional heat stroke (EHS) is 100 percent preventable when proper recognition and treatment protocols are implemented.*

A recent study presented by Central Michigan University compared the PLP to the NATA recommended cooling immersion tub for heat illness. Portable CWI techniques are becoming increasingly popular for EHS treatment, as stationary tubs (TUB) may be impractical in certain situations. This study found the PLP cooled hyperthermic subjects faster than the TUB and with fewer resources.

Treatment of Exertional Heat Illness (NATA)*
  • The goal for any EHS victim is to lower core body temperature to less than 102.5°F (39.2°C) within 30 minutes of collapse.
  • CWI is the most effective way to treat a patient with exertional heat stroke. The water should be 35-59°F (1.7-15°C) and continuously stirred to maximize cooling.
  • An athlete suffering from EHS should always be cooled first (via CWI) before being transported by EMS to an emergency facility.
Central Michigan Conclusions & Clinical Implications**
  • The NATA recommends EHS victims be treated with CWI using water between 1.7°C (35°F) and 15°C (59°F) so patients' rectal temperature (TREC) cooling rates exceed 0.16°C/min (32.3°F/min).
  • Both the PLP and TUB exceeded expert recommendations for "ideal" cooling rates (i.e., > 1.06°C/min (32.3°F/min)) and are excellent options to treat hyperthermia and, potentially, EHS.
  • The PLP cooled hyperthermic subjects faster than TUB and with fewer resources. This was because much colder water temperatures were possible, with the ice volumes constraints, in the PLP.
